There aren’t many true “high roller” poker players in the world, and Germany appears to have cornered the market. Dominik Nitsche is the latest to take down one of these major tournaments, winning the €111,111 High Roller for One Drop on Sunday at the World Series of Poker Europe in Rozvadov. Nitsche earned just over US$4 million for his victory, easily the biggest prize of his impressive career; he was one of four German players in the top six at the High Roller, outlasting Christoph Vogelsang (sixth) and Steffen Sontheimer (fifth) before defeating Andreas Eiler heads-up.
With the High Roller for One Drop out of the way, only one WSOP bracelet event remains at Rozvadov: the Main Event. Day 2 of this prestigious €10,350 No-Limit Hold’em tournament was Monday, with just under 200 players from the 529-entry field remaining at press time. Chris “Jesus” Ferguson was not among them, having been eliminated during Day 1B on Sunday, but he still leads the WSOP Player of the Year race.
Second Casino in the Works for Philadelphia
Thanks to Pennsylvania’s recent gambling expansion bill that was signed into law last week, poker players in Philadelphia can finally look forward to the completion of that city’s second casino. After a three-year hiatus, the Live! Hotel & Casino project in South Philly is expected to resume construction sometime next year, with a possible opening date in 2020. SugarHouse Casino, the only other casino inside city limits, dropped its lawsuit over the proposed ownership structure, which includes Bob Manoukian, the majority owner of nearby Parx Casino and Racing in Bensalem.
WPT Tournament of Champions Returns to Aria
The World Poker Tour has confirmed its return to Aria Resort and Casino in Las Vegas for the Tournament of Champions, which will wrap up Season XVI in May 2018. Every Main Event winner from this year’s main WPT tour earns an automatic entry, while club members from previous seasons are allowed to pony up $15,000+$400 and buy-in directly. The Tournament of Champions is the WPT’s flagship event, formerly known as the WPT Championship and the WPT World Championship; previous winners include David Williams, Scott Seiver, Carlos Mortensen and Marvin Rettenmaier.
